Learner Licence

To apply for a Class 1 (Car) Learner's Licence the minimum age requirement is 16 years old.

The test is made up of 35 questions about road rules, road hazards and safety practices, of which you must correctly answer 32 questions to successfully pass.

The questions are made up of a mixture of multi choice and true/false.

Use the Road Code Book to help you prepare you for your test.

If you are having any difficulties you can apply for:

  • Extra time to complete the theory test
  • The theory test to be given orally

The Test can be given in multiple languages:

Arabic, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Māori, Punjabi, Samoan, Tongan.

 

Learner Licence Conditions

  • You must have your learner licence with you when you are driving.
  • You must not drive alone. You must always be accompanied by a supervisor who must always sit in the front passenger sit beside you.
  • Display L (Learner) plates on the vehicle at all time. Failure to do so will result in 25 demerit points and a fine of $100.
  • Zero alcohol limit for under 20. 400 micrograms per litre of breath if your 20 or older.

Restricted Licence

  • You can apply for your Class 1 (Car) Restricted once you have completed your 6 months on your Learner Licence.
  • Test duration is approximately one hour.
  • The you use for your test must have the following:
  • Current warrant of fitness (WoF)
  • Car registration
  • Working brake and indicator lights
  • L plates on display
  • Always carry your licence when you drive.
  • Cannot drive between 10pm to 5am unless accompanied by a supervisor.
  • Follow any conditions on the back of your licence.
  • The only passengers you can carry without a supervisor are:
  • Your spouse, or the person you live with as if you were married or with whom you are joined in a civil union.
  • Children who live with you and are under the care of you or your spouse (that is, you or your spouse are their parent or guardian your parent or guardian.
  • Relatives who live with you and who are on a social security benefit.
  • Someone you look after as their primary caregiver.
  • Zero alcohol limit for under 20. 400 micrograms per litre of breath if your 20 or older.

Full Licence

  • You need to be atleast 18 years old to be eligible for a full licence.
  • If under 25 years old you must have held your restricted licence for at least 18 months.
  • Or at least 12 months if you've completed a Defensive Driving Course.
  • If over 25 years old you must have held your restricted licence for at least 6 months.
  • Or at least 3 months if you've completed a Defensive Driving Course.
  • if you pass your test, you can drive any time with passengers in your car.
